Sao Tome and Principe official name: Democratic Republic of S o Tome and Prncipe) is an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea. In Greek, the name of the state means Saint Thomas and Prince.
It is the second smallest country in Africa. It consists of two islands, Sao Tome and Principe, with a total area of ??1,001 square kilometers, which are 140 kilometers apart and are located approximately 250 and 225 km, respectively, off the northwest coast of Gabon. Both islands are part of an inactive volcanic mountain range.
Sao Tome, the largest southern island, is located almost exactly at the equator. It was named after St. Thomas as Portuguese explorers discovered the island on the day of his feast.
The population of Sao Tome and Principe is 210,240 according to official estimates for 2020. Sao Tome is the capital. The official language is Portuguese.
It became independent from Portugal in 1975.
The islands of Sao Tome and Principe are located in the Ecuadorian and Atlantic Oceans at a distance of about 300 and 250 km, respectively, off the northwest coast of Gabon, making it the smallest country in Africa.
Both islands are part of a volcanic mountain range, which includes the Anbonon Islands to the southeast, the Bioko Islands to the northeast (both islands are part of Equatorial Guinea and Mount Cameroon off the west coast of Africa.
The island of Sao Tome is the most mountainous of the two islands, with the highest point at 2,024 m. The Principe has rich forests and fertile soil.
The climate is tropical, warm and humid, with the average temperature reaching about 27  C (80  F) annually with small differences from day to day. The temperature rarely exceeds 32  C. At higher altitudes, the temperature is around 20  C (68  F) and generally cool at night.
The average annual rainfall ranges from 5 m on the southwestern slopes to 1 m on the northern, lower soils. The rainy season lasts from October to May.
